HELP KEEP SHOREBIRDS SAFE!

  1. Follow the advice of bird-nesting signs and roped-off areas on the beach.

  2. Walk your dogs on dog-friendly beaches only and always keep them on a leash, unless you’re on an off-leash beach.

  3. Drive only on designated beaches and keep below the high-tide mark.

  4. In nesting areas, stick to the wet sand and give the birds plenty of space.

While out and about volunteering for the National Parks South Coast Shorebird Recovery Group, I've noticed that most people don't know much about our threatened shorebirds and the importance of protecting their nesting habitat. I didn't either, until I started helping out!

Beach-nesting shorebirds build their nests right on the sand. Their eggs and chicks are very well camouflaged, making them hard to spot and easily disturbed by unaware beachgoers and unleashed dogs.

These postcards are a tool to inform the community of the simple things they can do to help protect the future of these birds.

The postcard format and stamp graphic are a nod to migrating shorebirds and the cards have the potential to reach multiple recipients by being posted with a personalised message to a friend or family member.
